In short

On the morning of Friday 23 October the Met Office extended its Storm Boelo yellow wind warning south and brought the start forward. It now covers North, South and West Yorkshire, York, Hull, the East Riding and North and North East Lincolnshire, from 12 noon on Saturday 24 October to 9pm on Sunday 25 October, with gusts of 55 to 65mph widely.

What changed on Friday morning

When we wrote about Storms Austen and Boelo on Thursday, the weekend warning covered North Yorkshire and the Tees Valley only, and started at 6pm on Saturday. The Met Office updated it at 10:01am on Friday 23 October. Its stated reason is that the start time has been brought forward and the warning area extended further south.

The yellow warning now runs from 12 noon on Saturday 24 October to 9pm on Sunday 25 October. In our area it covers:

  • North Yorkshire and York
  • South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire
  • Kingston upon Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire
  • North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire
  • Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland and Stockton-on-Tees

The Met Office expects strong southerly winds on Saturday morning, then stronger westerly winds later in the day, staying very windy overnight before easing on Sunday. Gusts of 55 to 65mph are likely widely, and some coastal and exposed places could see 70 to 80mph or more. An amber warning is in force for Northumberland, outside our area.

What to do before Saturday lunchtime

If you live in Hull, the East Riding, northern Lincolnshire or South and West Yorkshire, this is the first time the weekend wind has been in a warning for you, and the start is now midday rather than evening. That leaves Saturday morning at most to get ready.

The Met Office lists "some damage to buildings and trees, such as tiles blown from roofs" among the possible impacts. It advises securing loose items such as bins, garden furniture, trampolines, sheds and fences, and getting ready for possible power cuts.

For the roof, check from the ground or from an upstairs window across the road, and stay off ladders and the roof itself.

  • Look along the ridge for gaps or cracked mortar, as loose ridge tiles often move first in a gale.
  • Look for tiles or slates sitting out of line, and for lifted flashing at the chimney.
  • Clear any blocked gutter you can reach from the ground, as the Met Office expects the weekend to be wet as well as windy.

Our winter roof checklist covers these in more detail. If a ridge tile already looks loose, our answer on rebedding ridge tiles or fitting dry ridge explains the options.

Once the wind has dropped

Walk round the house and look for broken tile or mortar on the ground. Check the loft with a torch for daylight or new damp around the chimney and along the ridge. Take dated photos of any damage before anything is moved, and read our guide to storm damage insurance claims before you call your insurer.

Doorstep callers often appear after a storm and say tiles are loose. Agree to nothing at the door and read our advice on doorstep roofers first.
