In short

At 8:42am on Saturday 24 October the Met Office extended its Storm Boelo amber wind warning south into North Yorkshire. It runs from 9pm on Saturday to 9pm on Sunday 25 October, with gusts of 60 to 70mph fairly widely and up to 80mph on exposed coasts. The rest of Yorkshire and the Humber stays under a yellow warning.

What changed on Saturday morning

On Friday the only amber warning near us covered Northumberland. The Met Office updated it at 8:42am on Saturday 24 October and says the warning has been extended further south across northern England. In our area it now covers North Yorkshire, from 9pm on Saturday 24 October to 9pm on Sunday 25 October. The clocks go back overnight, and the Met Office gives the end time in GMT, so 9pm Sunday is 9pm on your clock.

The Met Office expects the strongest winds from Saturday evening, moving east through Sunday. It forecasts fairly widespread gusts of 60 to 70mph, and gusts to 80mph in exposed coastal areas. Under the amber warning it says damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, is likely, and that power cuts may occur.

The yellow wind warning from 12 noon Saturday to 9pm Sunday still covers the rest of Yorkshire, York, Hull, the East Riding, North and North East Lincolnshire and the Tees Valley, with gusts of 55 to 65mph widely. North Yorkshire also has a yellow rain warning from 10am to 10pm on Saturday.

What to do before Saturday evening

If you live in North Yorkshire, you have until about 9pm to get ready, and the yellow warning already applies from midday. The Met Office advises bringing in or anchoring bins, plant pots and garden furniture, turning trampolines upside down or pegging them down, and locking shed doors.

Check the roof from the ground or from an upstairs window across the road. Stay off ladders and the roof itself, today and while the wind is up.

  • Look along the ridge for gaps or cracked mortar, since loose ridge tiles are often the first to move.
  • Look for tiles or slates sitting out of line and for lifted flashing at the chimney.
  • Clear a blocked gutter only if you can reach it from the ground, as rain is forecast as well.

Our winter roof checklist covers these checks in more detail. If you hear rattling or banging from the roof overnight, our answer on roof noises in the wind explains the likely causes.

Once the wind has dropped on Sunday night or Monday

Walk round the house in daylight and look for broken tile, slate or mortar on the ground. Check the loft with a torch for daylight showing through or new damp near the chimney and ridge. Take dated photos of any damage before anything is moved, then read our guide to storm damage insurance claims before you call your insurer.

Doorstep callers often turn up after a storm saying tiles are loose. Agree to nothing at the door, and read our advice on doorstep roofers first.
