The Storm Boelo yellow wind warning covers all of South Yorkshire until 9pm on Sunday 25 October. If slates, a chimney or a wall look ready to fall onto a pavement or road, report it to the council: Sheffield on 0114 273 4170, Barnsley on 01226 773555 out of hours, and Rotherham on 01709 336003 for emergencies. Call 999 if anyone is in danger.
The warning in South Yorkshire
The Met Office yellow wind warning for Storm Boelo covers Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster until 9pm on Sunday 25 October. It expects gusts of 55 to 65mph widely, very windy weather through much of Sunday, then easing from the southwest later in the day.
Among the possible impacts it lists tiles blown from roofs, trees or large branches blown over, flying debris and power cuts. Most of the damage a roofer sees after a gale is at the edges and top of the roof: ridge tiles, verges, slipped slates and lead flashing at the chimney.
If a chimney, slates or a wall look ready to fall
Keep people away from the area below it and call 999 if anyone is at risk. Then tell the council, which deals with dangerous structures that could fall onto the public.
- Sheffield: the council lists loose slates and gutters and leaning or damaged chimney stacks among the things to report. Call 0114 273 4170 or use its online form. Outside working hours it says to call 999 for imminent danger to life.
- Barnsley: for emergencies call 01226 772678 or 01226 772679, Monday to Friday 8:30am to 4pm. Outside those times call 01226 773555.
- Rotherham: the council's emergency line for dangerous structures, obstructions and trees is 01709 336003.
- Doncaster: use the dangerous structures page on the City of Doncaster Council website.
If it is your own roof, the council may make it safe, but the repair is still yours to arrange. Our answer on how long a tarpaulin can stay on a roof helps if you need to wait for a repair.
Fallen trees and branches
In Barnsley, the council says to call 999 if a fallen tree or branch may put someone at risk, and its 24-hour line on 01226 773555 if one is blocking a road or pavement. Sheffield treats a tree or branch blocking a road or footpath as an emergency; call Parks and Countryside on 0114 250 0500. In Rotherham, use 01709 336003.
If a tree has hit your roof, stay out of the rooms under the damage until it has been checked.
Checking your roof on Monday
Wait for daylight and calm weather. Walk round the house and look for broken tile, slate or mortar on the ground, and look up at the ridge and chimney from across the road. Check the loft with a torch for daylight or wet timber. Stay off ladders and the roof.
Take dated photos before anything is moved, then read our guide to storm damage insurance claims. If a single tile has gone, our answer on one missing roof tile explains why it is worth fixing quickly.
