The warning on the Humber and the coast
The Met Office yellow wind warning for Storm Boelo covers Kingston upon Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire until 9pm on Sunday 25 October. It expects gusts of 55 to 65mph widely and 70 to 80mph or more in some coastal and exposed places, easing from the southwest later on Sunday.
The Met Office also warns of large waves and beach material thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties, which matters most for homes facing the sea from Bridlington to Withernsea. Its listed impacts include tiles blown from roofs, power cuts, and roads and bridges that may close.
If tiles, a chimney or a wall look ready to fall
Keep people clear of the area below it, and call 999 if someone is at risk.
- East Riding: the council lists falling masonry and tiles, and damage caused by weather, among the dangerous structures it deals with. If there is an immediate risk of serious harm, it says to call (01482) 393939 straight away. Otherwise use the online form on its dangerous buildings page.
- Hull: report a dangerous building or structure through the online form on the Hull City Council website. The council says it will visit within 24 hours.
The council deals with the risk to the public. The repair to your own roof is still yours to arrange, and our answer on replacing slipped roof tiles explains what is usually involved.
Trees across roads and paths
East Riding of Yorkshire Council treats a tree blocking a road as an emergency and asks you to phone (01482) 393939. Hull City Council has an online form for fallen or dangerous council trees. For emergencies on Hull's roads, its highways page gives 01482 614 834 from 8am to 5pm and Civic Security on 01482 616 720 outside those hours.
Checking your roof once the wind drops
Leave it until daylight on Monday. Look from the ground for broken tiles on the path or in the garden, and from across the road for gaps along the ridge or lifted lead at the chimney. Check the loft with a torch, and if rain got in, our guide on finding a roof leak shows where to look. Stay off ladders and the roof.
Take dated photos before anything is moved and read our guide to storm damage insurance claims. Agree to nothing with doorstep callers who say your roof was damaged.
