Council numbers for a dangerous building
Keep people away from below anything that looks loose, and call 999 if someone is at risk. Each council's building control team deals with structures that could fall onto the public.
- Leeds: 0113 378 6006 in office hours, 0113 376 0499 out of hours, or the online form.
- Bradford: 01274 431000, day or night.
- Kirklees: the council's emergency contacts list gives 01484 414888 for severe weather damage.
- Calderdale: (01422) 288001 in office hours and (01422) 288000 out of hours. Its online form is only checked during working hours.
- Wakefield: a 24-hour emergency service on 01924 306557 in office hours and 0345 850 6506 outside them. The council lists storm damage as one cause.
The council deals with the danger to the public, but repairing your own roof is still yours to arrange.
Stone slate and older roofs
On older houses with heavy stone slate roofs, a slate whose fixing has failed in a gale can slide down and sit loose at the eaves. From the ground, look for slates out of line or resting on the gutter. Our page on stone slate roofing explains how they are repaired, and our answer on roof noises in the wind covers rattling you may have heard overnight.
Checking your roof on Monday
Wait for daylight and a calmer day. From the ground, look at the ridge, the verges and the chimney, and look in the loft with a torch for daylight or wet timber. Stay off ladders and the roof. For a tree blocking a road in Kirklees, the council gives 01484 414700 for road emergencies.
Take dated photos before anything is moved and read our guide to storm damage insurance claims. Agree to nothing with doorstep callers who say your roof was damaged.
