The Storm Boelo yellow wind warning covers Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland and Stockton-on-Tees until 9pm on Sunday 25 October. In Darlington, report a dangerous building on 01325 406112 out of hours. Redcar and Cleveland takes reports of damaged chimneys and loose tiles online. Call 999 if anyone is in danger.
The warning on Teesside
The Met Office yellow wind warning for Storm Boelo covers all five Tees Valley boroughs until 9pm on Sunday 25 October. Gusts of 55 to 65mph are expected widely, with 70 to 80mph or more possible on the coast and high ground, and the Met Office says the strongest gusts are most likely in Scotland and the far north of England.
It lists tiles blown from roofs, trees blown over, power cuts and large waves on sea fronts among the possible impacts. A new yellow wind warning for Tuesday 27 October covers Durham and Tyneside but not the Tees Valley boroughs.
If a chimney or tiles look ready to come down
Keep people away from below it, and call 999 if anyone is at risk.
- Darlington: the council asks for all buildings that appear dangerous to be reported, and lists storm damage as a cause. Call 01325 406214, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, or 01325 406112 out of hours.
- Redcar and Cleveland: the council lists damaged chimneys and loose tiles as dangerous structures, including on private homes, and severe weather as a cause. Report them through its online form.
- Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees and Hartlepool: use the dangerous buildings or emergency contacts page on your council's website.
The council deals with the danger to the public, and the repair to your own roof is still yours to arrange. If the chimney is the problem, our chimney repairs page explains what we usually find.
Fallen trees
Hartlepool Borough Council says to contact the police on 101 if a tree has fallen or is causing an immediate hazard, or 999 in an emergency. Redcar and Cleveland takes reports of fallen trees and branches through its online tree form.
Checking your roof on Monday
Wait for daylight and a calmer day. Look from the ground and from across the road at the ridge, the verges and the chimney, and look in the loft with a torch for daylight or wet timber. Stay off ladders and the roof. If you heard banging in the night, our answer on roof noises in the wind explains the usual causes.
Take dated photos before anything is moved and read our guide to storm damage insurance claims.
